A show I recently discovered goes by the name of Dollhouse. It's a sci fi show that's placed in modern times. It's no longer running, unfortunately. Here's a trailer!
(There's a bit of blood and suggestive theming in it, warning!)
Something going for this show is that it's by Joss Whedon, who's one of my favorite director/producers.
Like any Whedon production it has its fair share of violence and subversion. One of my favorite things about his shows is that it's very difficult sometimes to figure out who the good guys are. You might find you trust someone, only to see them stab you in the back, whereas an absolute bully might end up being a hero of sorts. There's usually a pretty definite bad guy, though it's not overtly apparent until later in the series.
Another perk to the show is that it only ran two seasons, 26 episodes in all. I prefer these because it doesn't outlive its glory, but rather goes out in the midst of it. Although this probably happened because Fox told Joss they were canceling the show. Why DOES he work with those guys? They're jerks.
A few disclaimers here:
+ There's more than one sexy scene. Nothing's really shown, but it's a bit steamy at times
+ Violence is the answer more than once, there is blood
+ The first four episodes are not perfect and will have you wondering if you really want to commit to the next 22. I assure it is worth it
So if you have Netflix or HuluPlus (it's not on basic Hulu, I believe) and a bit of spare time one day, I'd say dive into it! Can't hurt!
Character notes: The Character "Topher Brink" is my favorite.
If you start and meet Boyd, you'll like him too... Yeah... heh heh heh
Give DeWitt a chance.
